In 1991, Valencia Town Council, journalist and art critic Mr Vicente Ávalos Ruíz, suggested to Mr Salvador Giner, then the highest authority in Music, that a Municipal Band should be created. The Valencia Municipal Band, conducted by Santiago López, gave its first concert on 8th December 1903. They performed for the fist time L’entrà de la Murta, written by Maestro Giner for this event. Under the leadership of Maestro López  the Band achieved countless successes including three first prizes at the Bilbao International Contest in 1905.

The Municipal Band has had several chief conductors along the years: Maestros Vega, Ayllón, Seguí, Palanca, Ferriz, Garcés, Ribelles and Sánchez Torrella.

The Municipal Band offers a great number of performances each year. Some of the most outstanding concerts are held at the Palau de la Música, at the Palau’s Gardens in June, in the surrounding neighbourhoods, small towns in the Comunidad Valenciana, several Europeans cities and the Town Council Protocol events.

Among its noteworthy international performances is the tour in Japan, where the Band participated with great success in the “2005 Japan Band Clinic”.

The Band has been awarded the Corbata de la Orden Civil de Alfonso X El Sabio, the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes and the Medalla de oro de la Ciudad de Valencia
